COVID-19: The CARES ACT and Paycheck Protection Program Loans
As of March 27th, the President signed into law the Coronavirus Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES Act), which is aimed a providing financial relief during this economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 epidemic. The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) will be available once final guidance from the SBA is sent to banks. PPP is a forgivable loan program designed to help businesses retain workers and meet other obligations during the Pandemic. It started in 2009 with one school and has grown since then to provide more than 360,000 books since the first distribution in 2009. It takes $30 to sponsor one child per year. This spring they will visit 20 schools and give away more than 100,000 books – Amazing! This program is designed to help stop “the summer slide.” When students have their own books at home to read over the summer, they are more apt to continue to read on or above their current grade level. As we know, all students do not have personal libraries at home, nor do they have a way to get to the library to borrow books.
